It seems the problem facing Gionee may have taken a new turn, as report revealed that the company’s official website has been taken down. Although the India arm is still working, the official Chinese website is no longer accessible.
Trouble started for the Chinese brand back in 2017, when a report revealed the company owed a total of CNY 20.2 billion ($3 billion approximately) to 648 creditors. The same year, Gionee also laid off a large percentage of its staff.
It is said that that the company’s chairman lost CNY 10 billion ($ 1.4 billion, approximately) in a bet at a casino, an allegation he denied. He later admitted to borrowing a chunk of the company’s fund but never revealed what it was used for. The company filed for bankruptcy and was granted by the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court late last year.
With the website down, it is safe to say Gionee has officially shut down its business in China. While the Gionee India site may still up, it is unclear how long this may be.
