While the National Identity Number (NIN) registration is still ongoing, it is important to note that both Airtel and MTN have also been granted a license to register Nigerians on the NIMC database.

Updating of SIM registration records with the National Identification Number (NIN) was made mandatory by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which a deadline was given. Currently, the government extended the deadline, which telecom giant MTN saw as a welcome development. This date extension was reached, after a stakeholders meeting with the Nigerian Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, alongside other operators.

MTN has now revealed that over 8 million subscribers have already uploaded their NIN on its platform. The telecom giant revealed that with the new extension date, subscribers with NIN now have three weeks to update their records while those without NIN now have six weeks. The company says it has been granted NIN registration license to facilitate the enrollment, alongside other operators.

The federal government on Monday extended the deadline for subscribers to link their NIN to their SIM cards, to January 19, 2021. For those who wishes to link their SIM but do know how, please see this post HERE.
